Agriculture is one important sector with huge potentials in Nigeria and of course anywhere else in the world so far as man exist there. This simple fact can never be over emphasized.
As early as primary school days, it has continually been drummed into our ears just how essential food is to man's survival. I can still remember with relish one of those social studies classes where aunty chinenye, my primary 4 school teacher first explained that the three basic needs of man is: food, clothing and shelter. I quickly registered that line in my mind although at that level, I barely understood what 'basic' meant. But I still crammed the line anyway, knowing that I can never bet against not seeing questions from that lesson during exams. As time goes on, this same fact was taught repeatedly during agric lessons, health education class, religious studies and subsequent social studies classes, even up till senior secondary school level. Infact, only a handful of other topics can compete with the 'basic needs of man' for the most repeatedly drummed topic of primary & secondary school education in Nigeria.
However, Despite all the repetitions & drummings, one ironic puzzle still remains. Why is agriculture, agribusiness and other closely related professions at the very core position of taking care of mans basic needs particularly the most important of them all - food production, not a popular prospect especially among the young ones of this generation? Is it that the 'basic need' concept wasn't drummed in enough? or like my former self, some are yet to understand the meaning of 'basic' in that very factual lesson?
Many young people today prefer 'white collar' jobs with fancy tittles & exquisite corporate appearance, even when it is very obvious that such jobs are increasingly becoming fewer & farfetched. For example, according to a recent report on unemployment released by the National bureau of statistics (NBS) yesterday 5/6/2017, percentage of the population unemployed increased from 13.9% in 2016 to 14.2% in 2017 and is particularly highest amongst the age brackets of 15-24yrs and 25-34yrs. So, why the continued indifference towards agriculture despite all these glaring statistics? And who says agriculture cannot be fancy?

Not very long ago, I had the opportunity to visit tsonghai farms initiative, one of the few agro base establishments in Nigeria at Tai local government area of Rivers State and was impressed on the beauty, serenity and well arranged nature of the farm site. I observed among other things that their workers are just as corporately groomed as those of other professions, except of course when its time for work they'll change into a more suitable farming kit.
Food is one thing all of us needs everyday, whether we are rich or poor, young or old. That is the meaning of the 'basic' in the lesson earlier mentioned. There are many things that man can do without but not food, not agriculture, & certainly not farming. Hence, venturing into agricultural sector will translate into entering a door of unending possibilities. Doing so will not only mean providing solution to a very important need, but also regular income for the business owner especially with events in recent times where a cup of garri now goes for as high as N100.
Against this backdrop, edenagrocentre.blogspot.com.ng has been set up with passion & love for the oldest profession of man – agriculture, and with a view to provide motivation, information, support and encouragement to all existing and intending serious agribusiness men & women in Nigeria and beyond. It will also serve as a hub of fun and socialization, fostering interactions among members and enabling them promote their agribusiness.
Thanks!
